Would Americans knowingly invest in genocide? Research shows that we are extremely opposed to investments tied to these horrendous acts against humanity. But many of us are supporting genocide and don’t even know it!

Investors Against Genocide (IAG) is a citizen led initiative. They ask financial institutions to avoid investments in companies known to heavily contribute to genocide or crimes against humanity. Most of us hold investments through mutual funds and are inadvertently supporting genocide. Last Tuesday IAG testified before Congress asking for more transparency of investments linked to genocide.

In his testimony, IAG’s chairperson Eric Cohen said, “Long term inaction by financial institutions highlights the need for Congress to help empower Americans to make investment choices in line with their personal values. If it is important enough for the US government to impose sanctions related to human rights that prevent American companies from doing business in the country, then the funds in which America saves should have an extra level of due diligence and disclosure regarding their related investments.” While IAG didn’t ask for total restriction of investments linked to genocide, they feel investors deserve material facts to make informed choices. Most funds do not provide a human rights policy for investors. Eric Cohen told Congress, “Small improvements in disclosure and transparency rules related to human abuses can have a big effect.”
